Prof. Ts. Dr. Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim
Background
Professor Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim is the Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and the architect of UTM ASCEND 2030, the university's strategic plan for 2026 to 2030. A computer scientist who began his career in image processing and computer vision, he has published more than 219 indexed articles, holds an h-index of 35 with over 4,000 citations, supervised 42 PhD students and holds a patent for a method of processing images. He has secured international funding including an EU Horizon 2020 grant. Before becoming Vice-Chancellor he served UTM as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), and during that tenure the university established Malaysia's first Faculty of Artificial Intelligence, launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on 10 May 2024. His earlier leadership roles include Head of Department, Deputy Dean, Chair of Undergraduate Studies and Chief Operating Officer of UTM SPACE College. He founded the Media and Game Innovation Centre of Excellence (UTM MaGICX), UTM SPACE College and the Institute for Life Ready Graduate (UTM iLeaGue). His leadership rests on four values: integrity, synergy, excellence and sustainability. He has called for an adab centred approach to AI, so that innovation never loses sight of the human soul.
Research Interests
Digital image processing algorithms and techniques, computer vision, object detection for cargo and baggage screening with adversarial learning, smart and secure scanning technology using AI, serious games for leadership education, competency based curricula for digital talent, and future oriented academia.
